Message From the Interim Superintendent

Dear Santa Clara Unified Community,

It is with gratitude and great enthusiasm that I join the SCUSD team as your Interim Superintendent. While we will surely have many opportunities to get to know one another, interact, and work together over the course of the coming year, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and extend a warm greeting.

I don’t believe there is any higher calling than serving our children and youth and I am looking forward to engaging with you around that mission and supporting the teaching and learning underway in the district. Please introduce yourself as you see me about the district — I am eager to meet our students and the people who make the magic happen for the youth of Santa Clara Unified!

I come to you most recently from the Santa Clara County Office of Education and am keenly aware of the excellent reputation and tradition of excellence in Santa Clara Unified. It is my great honor to join the SCUSD team and I am eager to work alongside you and our staff to continue that tradition of excellence.

I am inspired by the core values that are articulated in the Vision 2035 plan. When I think of the values that drive me and are the reason I get up every day to do this work, they are the very same values that are so aptly articulated in that plan. I can’t think of a stronger statement of what matters: students first, excellence through continuous improvement, integrity and ethical stewardship, connected families and collaborative community, equity and social justice, empathy and respect, and world-leading and future-ready. What a bold and inspiring vision for our youth! I am enthused to work alongside you over the coming year as we work together to live these values on a daily basis.

I look forward to meeting you as the new year commences. In the meantime, if you would like to know a bit more about me and my background, visit the superintendent’s bio webpage. I am excited to imagine what we can accomplish together for the students of SCUSD this year. Until then, I hope that you and your students are finding time this summer to spend quality time together, read a bit, play a bit, and explore their passions.

With appreciation,

Dr. Gary Waddell
Interim Superintendent
