Mental Health Awareness Resource for Families
May 2023
Did you Know? In the United States, 1 in 6 students between the ages of 6–17 experience a mental health disorder each year. In addition, suicide is the second leading cause of death among children ages 10–14. The number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing and many students report having high levels of anxiety and stress.
“Angst,” is a documentary-style film that was created to educate adults who support kids about what is causing stress and anxiety, and what it feels like for them. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, educators, experts, and parents. It is available to SCUSD families and staff for free through the end of June. In conjunction with the film, there are discussion guides, FAQ documents, a discussion panel, and other resources available on the Calhope website. Families can watch the movie with their kids or on their own.
This is an important resource — the more we know and understand what is happening in our children’s lives, the better equipped we will be to respond to their needs and support them.
