Art, Music, and Technology Combined at Callejon

June 2021

At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, Don Callejon students compiled a series of videos featuring stories set to images of student artwork and music.

3rd graders in teacher Jennifer Kontich and Joy Lindsay’s class collaborated week-by-week to write the plot of an adventure story, using Google Songmaker to compose music to fit the latest scene. The multi-media project was developed by music teacher Cliff Rawson during the 2020-2021 school year for elementary school students — he dubbed his creation the “Musical Movie.”

“We share a Google Sheet where plot events are summarized at the top of columns, and they submit their compositions and drawings underneath in individual rows, and I am able to provide feedback on their compositions,” said Rawson. “

At the end of the year, Rawson compiled all of the work to create the finished product, City of Dragons, which you can enjoy below.

“I embellish and arrange the music that they submit to demonstrate compositional possibilities, but their submissions serve as central themes and are clearly audible throughout each piece,” Rawson explained.
