Millikin Students have a Virtual Visit with Mayor Gillmor

January 2021

On January 15, Millikin Elementary School 3rd graders had a fun and informative virtual visit with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor.  The mayor was invited to speak with the four classes as part of the school’s social studies curriculum where the kids learn about local government — what better way than from the source.

Mayor Gillmor graciously agreed to join the online meeting and thoroughly engaged the students. She spoke about the different jobs in the city, including the mayor's job and the challenges and the successes associated with it. Students especially liked being able to ask the mayor questions directly and get answers they understood.

Mayor Gillmor wrapped up the meeting with a virtual tour of the council chambers, which most students had never seen before.

“We really appreciated her time and her fun way of communicating with the kids,” said 3rd grade teacher Diane Ridley.
