July 22, 2020

Dear Santa Clara Unified Families:

We are looking forward to welcoming your children to the 2020-2021 school year. Please read this entire communication very carefully as it contains important announcements about the instructional models available and instructions on how to access the Instructional Model Selection Form.

Through community feedback this week, we have heard that some families need more details and time to make a decision about which instructional model they will choose for their child, for if and when the district offers hybrid or in-person learning in the 2020-2021 school year. We have moved the deadline to Friday, July 31, following the July 29 board meeting when the final District Reopening Plan will be approved. If you have already decided on an instructional model for your child, please complete the form as soon as possible so that your child’s school can begin their planning right away.

Our district has been carefully planning for a safe and welcoming return to school. A phased-in approach will be used to move students to the hybrid and in-person learning models for if and when SCUSD offers hybrid or in-person learning and if one of those models was selected by your family. Each family will be able to choose from several distinct options, one option for each child. Please carefully read sections below that pertain to students in your family regarding fall 2020 options for your child.

Elementary Schools

Families with students in elementary schools MUST complete an Instructional Model Selection Form for fall 2020 by July 31.

  • Elementary program options: Distance Learning, Hybrid Learning, or Independent Study. Descriptions and details about the program options are located in the Instructional Model Selection Form.
  • Look for communication from your school principal for schedules and contact information, and also continue to read the district updates.

Comprehensive Middle and High Schools

Families with students at Buchser, Cabrillo, Callejon, and Peterson middle schools, and Santa Clara and Wilcox high schools DO NOT need to complete an Instructional Model Selection Form for fall 2020.

  • These schools will remain in distance learning for the entire fall semester (through the December break).
  • If the schools determine that hybrid or in-person learning models can be safely and consistently offered to students in the spring semester, families will be sent an Instructional Model Selection Form in November 2020.
  • Look for communication from your school principal for schedules and contact information, and also continue to read the district updates.

Why distance learning for secondary students for the whole semester? Based on the educational needs of our students and the structure of our comprehensive middle and high school schedules, having a full semester focused solely on high-quality distance learning balances the educational needs of students with the safety needs of all stakeholders. During spring, our middle and high schools demonstrated that, with the right student supports, teaching techniques, and class structures, our students were able to continue to learn in robust ways in a distance learning format. Additionally, keeping one consistent learning model allows the comprehensive schools to continue to provide all students with a wide array of choices in courses that our students and families enjoy. Finally, this learning model maximizes a predictable and consistent schedule for students, families, and staff and minimizes schoolwide disruptions caused by COVID-19 exposures.

Alternative Schools and Programs

Families with students at Mission Early College and New Valley high schools MUST complete an Instructional Model Selection Form for fall 2020 by July 31, 2020.

  • These schools and programs will move to hybrid and then in-person learning as soon as allowable by the California and Santa Clara public health departments.
  • Due to the small size of these schools, it has been determined that hybrid learning models can be safely and consistently offered to students in the fall semester with little disruption if students and staff need to quickly pivot to distance learning due to surges in COVID-19 in the school, district, or Santa Clara County.
  • If your family does not wish to transition to hybrid or in-person learning when the district moves from Phase 1 to Phases 2 and 3 of the District Reopening Plan (see page 19) following criteria set by public health officials, please select distance learning or independent study on the Instructional Model Selection Form. Descriptions and details about the program options are located in the Instructional Model Section Form.
  • Look for communication from your school principal for schedules and contact information, and also continue to read the district updates.

Families with students at Santa Clara Community Day School, Wilson High School, and Wilson Post Secondary Program DO NOT need to complete an Instructional Model Selection Form for fall 2020.

  • Wilson High School students will continue with their existing independent study program, meeting with teachers remotely until we can resume in-person meetings.
  • Santa Clara Community Day School and Wilson Post Secondary Program students will start the school year in distance learning and receive additional details and options directly from their school.
  • Look for communication from your school principal for schedules and contact information, and also continue to read the district updates.
