2020 STEAM Expo: March 28
The district’s 2020 STEAM Expo is approaching fast on March 28 and students at Peterson Middle School started their preparations early with a video contest to publicize the event. The winning commercial — created by Shreya Chhaparwal, Shaanvi Mahesh, and Jazzy Ramirez — was filmed by the all-girl team on location at Mission College, where this year’s event will be held.
The video contest was the brainchild of science teacher Ildiko Stennis who suggested the competition to Educational Technology Coordinator Shann Chu. 64 Peterson students participated in the pilot contest using Google Classroom and eight teams submitted final projects. Stennis explained that due to the fact that this was the first year running the competition it was piloted at Peterson Middle School only, but next year, the plan is to include the other Santa Clara Unified middle schools as well.
“We had a lot of K-5 kids participating in last year’s STEAM Expo but not as many middle school or high school students,” science teacher Ildiko Stennis told the Silicon Valley Voice. “One of the goals for the upcoming STEAM Expo is to encourage under-represented students and older students to participate.”
What exactly is a STEAM Expo? The SCUSD STEAM Expo showcases student projects and celebrates their learning in or out of the classroom! Our hope is that students will take this amazing opportunity to share their STEAM projects, and also check out projects made by their peers. All participants will be entered into a raffle to win great prizes, such as a free summer camp by Camp Captivate, multiple Xboxes, and gift cards.
Who should attend? Everyone is welcome — families who are not participating in the expo can not only view the student’s work but also take part in a number of activities. Get your passport stamped as you complete the activities and trade it in when you’re finished for a unique Lego kit souvenir.
