MECHS Club Fair and Nature Visit

September 2019

Mission Early College High School (MECHS) successfully hosted its first fall semester Club Fair on September 17. The Commissioner of Clubs, Audrey Mabanta, did an amazing job at making the fair go smoothly.

The club presidents prepared informative triboards, interactive activities, and snacks to welcome new members into their clubs. Students were able to check out different types of clubs ranging from cultural, games, and community service-centered groups. SCUSD Board Member, Andy Ratermann, stopped by to show his support for the students and Interact Club.

September was a busy month for students! On September 20, MECHS Honors US History (HUSH) students traveled to Henry Cowell State Park in Felton, California. Students were taught how to construct a basket from Ponderosa Pine needles in the traditional manner of the Ohlone people of the Central Coast of California. Local volunteers from the Mountain Parks Foundation led the basketry class and helped students master the technique.

After the basketry class, students went on a docent-led walk through the park and learned more specifically about the local indigenous peoples and their relationship to the redwood forests of Santa Cruz County.

“It was nice to get out in nature and take a break from the classroom and all of the textbook annotations we do,” said HUSH student, Kent Williams.
