Rotary Takes Big Steps to Provide for our Students
The motto of the Rotary Club of Santa Clara is “Service Above Self” and the club certainly attained this on October 5 at the annual Steps 4 Success event where they gave out around 250 pairs of athletic shoes to our students.
The event — hosted for the first time at Mission College — is dedicated to providing school-aged children and their siblings with properly fitted athletic shoes. In addition to the shoes and a new pair of socks, students also got to choose a book from a wide variety of options and received a goodie bag stuffed with 49ers giveaways.
As Rotary volunteers carefully fitted the shoes, volunteers painted faces and helped students at the jewelry and coloring stations. The bounce houses were a welcome addition to the activities this year, along with sports giveaways from One on One Basketball Inc. and Kona Ice.
“Watch me run as fast as Flash,” one student told a volunteer after putting on his new sneakers. “Where did he go,” the volunteer replied smiling.
The Steps 4 Success program was started by Rotarian Vera Miller over 20 years ago and while some aspects of the event have changed, including the name, the goal has remained the same — to serve the needs of the community. Throughout the year, the Rotary Club of Santa Clara runs multiple fundraisers to raise money for the event, the largest of which is the Silicon Valley Barbecue Championships.
Big thanks to all of the event sponsors, including All Reasons Moving, Mission City Community Fund Library Foundation, Sports Basement, Montessori School of Silicon Valley, the San Francisco 49ers, New Balance, Lexus of Stevens Creek, and Kona Ice.
Extra special thanks go to our event hosts, Mission Collge and we graciously thank Rotary for their ongoing work to help our students succeed in this ever-changing world.
