Possible PG&E Power Outages beginning Wednesday, October 9, 2019

October 10, 2019

Our district's schools remain open and unaffected by power outages.

While the PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff currently underway across Northern California is not anticipated to impact our schools, some families may live in areas that will experience power outages. Bay Area Residents can track their status through the PG&E Outage Center Map or alternatively use the map provided by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Dear Santa Clara Unified Community,

Earlier this week, we learned that PG&E may hold a Public Safety Power Shutoff event beginning on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, across multiple California counties. According to the PG&E website, it does not appear that the possible power outages will occur in Santa Clara Unified School District or that these will impact our schools.

However, should power be shut off to our schools, children will be safe and we are able to maintain a normal schedule. We will have running water, food service, and natural light. Power outages affect our phone systems, computers, and school cafeterias. The district’s phone lines run through an internet connection (VoIP), so the school’s phone lines will also be down. However, just for such situations, each school has an emergency landline phone and all administrators have cell phones.

In the event of a power outage, coordination of communication, services, and support will begin immediately between the district’s Superintendent, Facilities, Nutrition Services, and the IT departments. The district’s Nutrition Services department will coordinate alternate lunch options when power outages affect our kitchens and meal times.

Visit www.pge.com for details regarding the planned shutoff, including a searchable map by address location.

If you need to reach your school during a power outage, please contact our District Office at communications@scusd.net and we will get your message to the school.

Sincerely,

Stella M. Kemp
