Stanford Goes the Extra Yard for Teachers

September 2019

Congratulations to Ponderosa teacher Cathleen Thorwaldson for being chosen by the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) and Stanford Athletics to be one of the Extra Yard for Teachers winners. As a winner, Cathleen got to pick out $2,000 worth of classroom supplies, including leveled books and flexible seating options, that will be delivered to her classroom, courtesy of the College Football Playoffs. In addition, Cathleen was honored on the field at the September 21 Stanford versus Oregon football game.

“Cathy Thorwaldson is an extremely dedicated teacher,” said Principal Alissa Meltzer. “She is kind, collaborative, caring and fun. She builds strong relationships with her students and is an expert in 1st grade content. Because of her excellent work, STEP chooses to partner with her almost every semester, by placing a teaching candidate in her classroom. Those candidates lucky enough to work with Cathy are always well prepared for their own classrooms. She is a great role model and an excellent mentor. She is so very deserving of this honor!

The Extra Yard for Teachers program recognizes educators for the hard work they put into our community by “championing great classroom leaders.” Every year, the College Football Playoffs give teachers money to use in their classrooms as part of Extra Yards for Teachers week.

Thank you to everyone involved for your partnership and dedication to help with our mission to prepare our students for success in an ever-changing world.
