HandsOn Tomorrow Prep Central Park’s Outdoor Learning Area
Over the summer break, HandsOn Tomorrow, the youth summer program run by HandsOn Bay Area, lovingly spruced up picnic tables and garden bed cages at Central Park. In addition, they built new hand-washing stations in preparation for improved outdoor STEAM experiences for teachers and students.
Central Park Elementary School is a K-5 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) magnet school that acts as SCUSD’s pilot program site to test, evaluate, and then adopt successful programs across the district’s elementary schools. Central Park’s garden is a vital investment that supports four-hundred students. Since 2017, garden education program pilots have been taking place at Central Park with a special focus on school garden integration with Next Generation Science Standards for grades K-5.
We are grateful to the HandsOn Bay Area volunteers for helping the garden at Central Park continue to be a powerful education tool that supports the STEAM education principles of collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking in an outdoor learning space.
