Welcome Back from Superintendent Dr. Kemp
August 14, 2019
Dear SCUSD families,
Be sure to set your alarm clock! The 2019-2020 school year starts on August 15.
We know it's going to be a very warm day Thursday and Friday. Plans are in place at our schools to ensure that students and staff are safe. For more information and resources about our local heat advisory and air quality, visit our website at www.santaclarausd.org.
Our district’s mission - to prepare your student to succeed in an ever-changing world - is our number one priority, and that includes ensuring that your child is educated in a healthy and safe learning environment. We can all succeed at this if we make school attendance a priority. As parents, we have dreams for our children - the sky’s the limit. As educators, we share this dream and want your child to be happy and successful. Regular attendance is critical to this success. Students have to show up to school every day to benefit. It may be surprising to know, research shows that college and workplace readiness starts in the elementary and middle school years. Students who have a well-rounded experience and are connected to their schools from the beginning are going to have far better outcomes later in life. And, it starts with showing up to school all day, every day. This year we will have a strong emphasis on student attendance and ongoing communication with parents.
This past Monday morning, we had a great 2019-2020 district launch with nearly 2,000 Santa Clara Unified employees attending the District Welcome Back event for staff at Wilcox High School! I received a very warm welcome to the team from all of our employees and got to witness first-hand our staff’s enthusiasm and school spirit as we head into what promises to be an exciting year for our district. Sutter Elementary School was this year’s “Spirit Award” recipient. You can learn more about this event by visiting our social media sites on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also see photos on our Flickr webpage (we’ll be adding more throughout the week) and watch a highlight video on our Youtube channel.
Join the back to school excitement! Follow us on social media @santaclarausd, use the hashtag #SCUSDfirstday and #SCUSDproud so that we can see and share your fun photos, and follow along on our social media wall. Here are some fun prompts to help you with your posts:
- Post back to school and first day of school photos of your children and family
- Post a photo with school staff and/or teachers
- What does your student most look forward to this school year?
- What does your student want to be when they grow up?
- Post an encouraging note to a #firstyearteacher
Thank you for choosing to be part of our SCUSD family. I look forward to working with you to prepare our students to succeed in this ever-changing world.
Stella M. Kemp, Ed.D.
