Wilcox Chargers Football Team Wins State Championship

We are proud to share that after winning 14 games — 12 of which were in a row — the Wilcox Chargers Football Team won the 2018 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 3-A State Championships. Not only that, but over the course of the season, the dedicated Chargers beat three Section Champions, Valley Christian, Capitol Christian, and Kaiser.

The team advanced to the state championships for the first time in school history after claiming the Northern California Division 3-A title in the state regional bowl game against Capital Christian on December 8, 2018. The game was exciting until the very last minute with a 34-30 win against the previously unbeaten Capital Christian team. According to Head Coach and Athletic Director Paul Rosa, the Chargers lost only one game in the entire season against Menlo Atherton. Not surprisingly, this was the hardest game the whole season.

While they may have made the season look easy with so many wins under their belt, there were still a couple of close calls, including a 34-30 win against Capitol Christian and a 10-6 win against Valley Christian.

“Our team has put in a lot of work in order to earn this great achievement,” said Paul Rosa. “We start lifting weights in January and just finished the season on Dec 15th, that is a serious commitment by the 47 players and 10 coaches on staff. I am proud of how hard the team played and the level of execution they demonstrated. We would like to thank everyone who supported us all year.”

Coach Rosa is especially proud this season as his son, and namesake, Paul M Rosa was the season’s MVP.

The Chargers will be recognized for their accomplishments at several events:

  • January 10 — Santa Clara University men's basketball game during half time
  • January 24 — SCUSD Board of Trustees meeting
  • January 29 — Santa Clara City Council meeting
  • Late February/early March — Assemblymember Kansen Chu at the State Capital
  • New banner located at the front of the school
