Update: 2020-2021 High School Grade Change Information

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Assembly Bill (AB) 167, a “clean-up” bill for AB 104, was signed into law on September 23, 2021. This bill extends the date for 2020-2021 high school course grade changes to October 1, 2021, and gives districts the flexibility to extend it beyond October 1. Santa Clara Unified high schools will accept grade change forms through June 1, 2022, the last day of the school year.

Due to the pandemic circumstances that many students and families encountered over the last 16 months, the State of California enacted measures which could mitigate the impact on a student’s transcript for the 2020-2021 academic year. AB 104/167 allows parents of students enrolled in grades 9-12 during the 2020-2021 school year to petition for a grade to be changed to “pass/no pass” for any course taken during the 2020-2021 school year. 

Why would a parent want to petition for a pass/no pass?

  • AB 104 requires all California State Universities to accept pass/no pass for courses taken during the 2020-2021 school year without prejudice and encourages the University of California schools and private universities to accept these changes as well. The California Department of Education has posted a list of the post secondary institutions that will accept pass/no pass grades for admission.*

In order to request a grade change for any grade during the 2020-2021 school year, please complete this Grade Change Form provided by the California Department of Education by June 1, 2022. Please submit the form to your school’s registrar at your school site.  All grade changes submitted via the application form provided will be reflected on the specific student transcript no later than 15 days from receipt of the application.

If the grade change application is not submitted by June 1, 2022, the letter grade earned will remain on the students' transcript permanently.
