Westwood Elementary Modernization

Project Updates as of June 2025:

The Work is divided into phases beginning with site work summer 2025. Work will extend into the 2025-26 school year. All projects phases will be completed by the end of 2026:

  • New multipurpose building with full kitchen, indoor/outdoor stage.
  • New lunch court between the kitchen-serving area and the multipurpose room. The lunch court is open under the building roof with skylights, preserving the existing access pathway through the campus.
  • The indoor/outdoor stage opens to the playground.
  • New parking lot and drives fronting Saratoga Avenue.

The following scope of work for this summer has been advertised for bids:

  • Demolish one classroom wing.
  • Construct a new preschool playground.
  • Install a new storm drain system for the east side of the campus including the turf field.
  • Plan approvals for the new multipurpose and classroom building are underway with the Division of the State Architect, the Department of Education, and the Santa Clara County Health Department (for the kitchen). City street encroachment permits have been obtained.
  • Significant work will take place in the middle of the campus. Fences, walls, barriers, and safety protocols will be in place to maintain safe school operation and minimize disruption.
  • The project will replace 19 existing trees with 35 new trees in optimum locations.
  • A plan showing the trees to be retained and removed is available below.
  • The construction schedule will likely be delayed by bird nesting restrictions imposed by Mitigation Measures in the approved CEQA Mitigated Negative Declaration.
