Measure B 1997

  • In June 1997, SCUSD passed Measure B, a $145 million bond authorization to improve health and safety conditions by the repair and renovation of neighborhood schools including replacing electrical, heating and plumbing systems to comply with current fire and safety standards and reducing danger from earthquakes with seismic upgrades and to enhance educational opportunities. The Measure B capital improvement program was augmented by State Facilities Act funding, joint use funding from the Cities of Santa Clara, San Jose and Sunnyvale and other sources.

Completed improvements included new elementary school play structures, new high school science classrooms and outdoor athletic facilities, major renovation of eleven elementary school campuses, an ambitious roof replacement program and two high school performing arts buildings.

District school facilities were constructed according to the Field Act requirements of the State Building Code which is heavily focused on earthquake safety. Asbestos and lead containing building materials are being managed and removed according to EPA and State and local requirements.

Bond program work has worked closely coordinated with the ongoing deferred ("major") maintenance program. Provisions have been made in the District Maintenance and Grounds budget to properly maintain the renovated facilities.
