    Update!

When returning to in-person learning, students may return to their school of previous attendance if space is available. If space is not available at the previous school of attendance, students will be overloaded and will be able to return for the 2022-2023 school year. Open enrollment status will be guaranteed for the 2022-2023 school year. More information: SCUSD Independent Study Program Update

California Assembly Bill 130, signed into law on July 9, 2021, requires districts to provide an independent study option for TK-12 grade students whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent or guardian. Independent study programs must meet all of the legal requirements regarding educational progress, grade-level standards, synchronous instruction, student engagement, and transitioning back to in-person instruction within 5 days if the parent/guardian determines that the health risk is no longer a concern. This program is an option for the 2021-22 school year only.

Please note that we are not holding open enrollment seats; If you enroll in the independent study program and wish to return to in-person learning, you will return to your homeschools if space is available.

SCUSD currently offers a high school independent study program at Wilson High School. When selecting to enroll in the Santa Clara Unified Independent Study program, high school aged students will be enrolled at Wilson High School in the current program. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade will enroll in the K-8 Independent Study program, which will be a program within and housed at Wilson. TK students will participate in a PM cohort with a teacher at one of our TK sites.

Independent study programs are an opportunity for students who:

    • Are academically independent, needing little to no instructional support
    • Are motivated and have strong time management skills
    • Are comfortable with less daily social interaction
    • Recognize that they will not have the same access to in-school activities and courses such as athletics, clubs, and certain electives
