A Message from the Superintendent
SANTA CLARA, Calif., - August 2010
Football coaches, baseball managers, migrating geese, school teachers and students all share optimism as they begin a new season in their lives. There’s excitement in anticipating the development of new relationships, renewing friendships, setting and attaining achievable goals, and in spreading one’s wings.
New for 2010-2011 will be updated textbooks in the language arts. The process for adopting new materials was lengthy and diligent, and the selected materials will be more contemporary and directly address State standards at all grade levels.
Class sizes at the primary grade levels will increase, as budgetary constraints preclude our ability to maintain the cap of twenty students per class in kindergarten and in grades one through three. The same is true for ninth grade English and math classes, and we will rely upon the expertise of our teachers and the efforts of our students in allowing academic progress to take place.
The modernization of elementary schools has been completed, and we are on target to complete the renovation of our middle and high schools by the end of 2014. The construction at Wilcox and Santa Clara High Schools is ambitious, but if the magnificence of what has already been completed is any indication of what’s to be, you will be very impressed. The projects at Peterson, Cabrillo and Buchser are also quite notable, and the facilities will be of extremely high quality.
The student population in Santa Clara Unified continues to climb at about the rate of one elementary school every two years. Ultimately, all schools will be affected, and the Board has charged me with the responsibility of making recommendations for meeting our facility needs for the near and distant future. Community presentations will be made in late August, and after taking community comment and suggestion, recommendations will be made to the Board prior to December of this year. The recommendations will address the reopening of closed sites, the addition of new classrooms on existing sites, possible boundary adjustments, and the possible construction of new schools.
Four Board members are up for re-election in November, and a vote on a bond to acquire a new site, renovate and add classrooms, invest in security and safety systems, and utilize renewable energy sources will appear on the November ballot as well.
So, we have many things for which to look forward this year, and as we move forward my communication to you will be updated.
Enjoy the new school year!
Sincerely,
Steve Stavis
Superintendent
